Why spring is the best time to plant?

The spring season is never determined by a specific date but more of an ecological time where biological indicators such as blossoming, animal activities and soil changes dictate the start of spring.  During this time, the earth tilts closer to the sun providing for longer and warmer days to arise. The snow begins to melt, and the ground begins to warm, rain now becomes our main precipitation. These conditions provide the ideal time for plants to take root and grow. Planting early also allows for the timely maturation of crops, while disease and pests are less active during this time.  While proper care must be taken, the arrival of spring marks an exciting time for growers and gardeners, as they can get their hands dirty and watch their work blossom. Thinking of producing a landscape that will leave your neighbors jealous this spring season? Schedule a consultation to allow our specialist to work hand in hand to produce the landscape of your dreams!

How do I know if aeration is needed? And when should I get it

Aeration is a vital part of a healthy lawn. The main reason to aerate is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils have too many solid particles in a certain space which prevents proper circulation of air, water, and nutrients within the soil. Excess lawn thatch or debris buried under the grass surface can starve roots from these essential elements. Many times, we don’t see the impact we have on our own lawn. If your lawn gets heavy use, it is recommended to aerate your lawn. The best time to get your lawn aerated is in the spring time with your spring cleanup. During this time the soil is warming up and the ability to have all the nutrients, oxygen, and water enter your lawn is crucial for a luscious green lawn.

What is fertilizer? Why do I need it? When do I apply it?

Fertilizer is a chemical or natural substance added to soil or land to increase its fertility. Fertilizers are added to crops to produce enough food or facilitate growth. Fertilizers provide crops or plants with nutrients like potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen which allow crops to grow bigger, faster, and to produce more food (depending on the plant). Rene and Sons Landscaping Inc. recommends 4 applications per year. The recommended time frame for each application is spring, early summer, late summer, and fall.
